It seems that it was not just the cowardly butcher Bloodymir Putin who surprised the world with their savage invasion of Ukraine, Planet Earth also decided to do the same, presenting not only abnormally high temperatures at the Poles (in some cases 30 ºC and 40 ºC higher than usual) but much worse than that, the heating takes place in both Poles at the same time. And if last year, in August, Europe broke its record for maximum temperature, with 48.8 ºC, in Italy, it can’t be very surprising if this year there is a new European record. Now add to this scenario the worrying conclusions of the article published this year in the Journal of Applied Physiology. The human body can survive a high temperature above 45 ºC ate low humidity conditions, due to the natural cooling mechanism, associated with the evaporation of sweat, And has been widely believed that a 35°C wet-bulb temperature (at 100 percent humidity) was the maximum a human could endure before they could no longer adequately regulate their body temperature, potentially causing heatstroke or death. PS – And in the meantime, an ice shelf with almost 500 square miles, previously thought to be stable has just collapsed in Antarctica which is not a good sign for things to come. Most likely the prediction of Oxford Professor Raymond Pierrehumbert that “Heat stress could make half the planet uninhabitable for mammals outdoors“ will eventually turn into reality.

O catedrático jubilado Vital Moreira, escreveu no seu blogue que este é um Governo de segundas escolhas devido ao facto do Primeiro-Ministro ter recebido negas a muitos convites, por conta do baixo salário do cargo de Ministro ! 

Descontando o facto desta argumentação ser de certa forma (e muito ironicamente) similar à do famoso artista Pedro Abrunhosa, que não é conhecido por saber muito de aritmética, eu também concordo em 99% com o referido catedrático, na parte relativa a “elevar as remunerações para a média das remunerações governamentais dos países da UE, medidas em paridade de poder de compra”. 

Já aquele 1% com que eu não concordo diz apenas respeito à palavrinha “Ministros”, que deve ser substituída pela palavrinha “investigadores”, pela simples razão que como dei conta em vários posts anteriores, os investigadores Portugueses recebem muito menos do que recebem investigadores que trabalham noutros países europeus (contra os quais competem directamente por verbas em projectos europeus), e isso mesmo descontando a diferença da riqueza produzida pelo nosso país e a riqueza produzida por esses países, a que acresce convém não esquecer uma recente guerra internacional pelo talento científico https://19-pacheco-torgal-19.blogspot.com/2022/01/a-escalada-na-guerra-pelos-talentos.html

Sobre salários de Ministros, convém ter presente que por exemplo a Primeira-Ministra da Dinamarca recebe anualmente um vencimento que é ligeiramente inferior ao vencimento do Reitor da Universidade de Copenhaga, o que significa que os salários dos Ministros daquele rico país serão ainda mais inferiores ao de um Reitor. Em Portugal porém e ao contrário da Dinamarca, o Primeiro-Ministro aufere (já incluindo a parte de despesas de representação) quase mais 40% do que o Reitor da Universidade de Lisboa, o que significa que os Ministros Portugueses, todos eles, recebem mais do que um Reitor, o que desmente que estejam assim tão mal pagos, como afirmou o catedrático jubilado Vital Moreira.

Mas o melhor exemplo, no que respeita a salários de Ministros chega dos EUA, que é aquele país de gente que adora dinheiro, mas onde muitos preferem deixar de ganhar milhões, para aceitarem o cargo equivalente a Ministro, passando então a receber nessa condição menos do que recebe um professor catedrático  https://pacheco-torgal.blogspot.com/2020/05/salarios-medios-para-professores.html 

É claro que pode suceder que a argumentação do catedrático jubilado Vital Moreira, tenha ainda que inconscientemente, sido fundada na recente ganância dos diplomatas ou no péssimo precedente que se comentou aqui, de um Português que recebe o dobro do que paga o cargo homólogo existente nos EUA ! Mas a ser assim a solução não passa por aumentar o salário dos Ministros Portugueses mas por urgentemente cortar o salário desse individuo que recebe muitíssimo mais do que deveria receber.

It is regrettable that the recent article published in The Chronicle of Higher Education (linked above), from which I have drawn the title of this post, is restricted behind a paywall. Nevertheless, and setting that limitation aside, the subject it touches upon—particularly the issue of spineless academic informants—brings to mind an insightful paper published in 2017. In that work, one finds a discussion of a practice that is just as abhorrent as the cowardly act of academic snitching: the insidious “war on science through acts of public shaming”

In a previous post, i wrote that the Russian Empire was a bad joke when compared to the Portuguese empire. However, this may have sparked some confusion, so I’d like to provide further context. The most famous Portuguese writer, Fernando Pessoa, whose life spanned from 1888 to 1935, eloquently expressed in his seminal work Book of Disquiet “my homeland is the Portuguese language“. 

When considering the ratio of people born in Portugal to Portuguese speakers worldwide, it’s remarkable – currently standing at nearly 25. Projections indicate this figure will soar to approximately 45-50 in the coming decades. In comparison, Russia’s ratio hovers just below 2, while Spain’s sits at around 10. To put this into perspective, the Spanish language would need over 1 billion speakers to achieve a ratio equivalent to Portugal’s, a milestone unlikely to be reached even by 2060, when Spain’s ratio is expected to hit 14. The UK’s ratio falls below 10, and even powerhouse nations like India and China exhibit significantly lower ratios than Portugal. It’s important to note that these ratios refer to native speakers

PS – The aforementioned Book of Disquiet was written in the aftermath of the First World War and on it Fernando Pessoa wrote the following “No empire justifies breaking a child’s doll”

Lowering room temperature in European households is of course an interesting idea but that does not work for the many millions that already live in energy poverty (Mapping energy poverty in the EU: policies, metrics and data). Moreover, 1.8 billion will have a minor impact on Russian energy exports that reached almost 500 billion in 2021.

A França que era há poucos anos o país recordista no acesso ao famoso site pirata Sci-hub (vide post acima), que é famoso por alojar publicações científicas sem ter permissão legal para esse efeito, foi ultrapassado pelos EUA e pela China, país asiático este que só no mês passado descarregou mais de 25 milhões de artigos da referida plataforma https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00556-y 

Sucede porém que dificilmente se pode considerar um roubo, aquilo que o SCI-HUB faz às editoras, pois também se pode considerar uma forma (refinada e cínica) de roubo, obrigar os cientistas a entregar de borla o produto do seu trabalho, que é depois vendido com  com elevado lucro do qual recebem literalmente zero, valendo assim o provérbio que dita que ladrão que rouba ladrão tem 100 anos de perdão. 

PS –  Quem sabe se mais Colegas mudam o seu “mindset” e começam a encarar as coisas nessa perspectiva, talvez daqui a uns tempos começem a sentir uma elevada indignação por conta desse roubo e nessa altura em vez de lermos trabalhos com o título “O que é conhecimento científico e como ele é criado, acumulado, transformado e usado?“  pudessemos ler antes algo muito mais realista, do género“O que é conhecimento científico e como ele é criado, acumulado, transformado e roubado?”

The recent link above shows that Sweden, Iceland, Finland, and Norway are the countries with the least discrimination levels in the workplace for women. However, it remains, to be seen, whether these advanced female work conditions will one day contribute to reaching the radical stage defended by the doctorate Meike Stoverock that I mentioned a year ago when I added a humorous question related to the mating habits of the Tasmanian devil.

However, bearing in mind that we are now living in the midst of a war (started by a pathological liar who, while in “university”, authored a poor academic dissertation and who is now so desperate, with troops that have no fuel and no food, that he just start using hypersonic missiles) a tragic moment that does not lend itself to moments of great humor, but which fortunately helps to remember that the most infamous genocides in History are all Male, so it makes sense to ask, would Meike Stoverock’s radical proposal allow us to reduce the number of genocides on our Planet?
