Tendo em que nos últimos anos escrevi vários posts sobre a catedrática Elvira Fortunato, que é a nova Ministra da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior deixo abaixo o link para três deles:

It is regrettable that the recent article published in The Chronicle of Higher Education (linked above), from which I have drawn the title of this post, is restricted behind a paywall. Nevertheless, and setting that limitation aside, the subject it touches upon—particularly the issue of spineless academic informants—brings to mind an insightful paper published in 2017. In that work, one finds a discussion of a practice that is just as abhorrent as the cowardly act of academic snitching: the insidious “war on science through acts of public shaming”

In a previous post, i wrote that the Russian Empire was a bad joke when compared to the Portuguese empire. However, this may have sparked some confusion, so I’d like to provide further context. The most famous Portuguese writer, Fernando Pessoa, whose life spanned from 1888 to 1935, eloquently expressed in his seminal work Book of Disquiet “my homeland is the Portuguese language“. 

When considering the ratio of people born in Portugal to Portuguese speakers worldwide, it’s remarkable – currently standing at nearly 25. Projections indicate this figure will soar to approximately 45-50 in the coming decades. In comparison, Russia’s ratio hovers just below 2, while Spain’s sits at around 10. To put this into perspective, the Spanish language would need over 1 billion speakers to achieve a ratio equivalent to Portugal’s, a milestone unlikely to be reached even by 2060, when Spain’s ratio is expected to hit 14. The UK’s ratio falls below 10, and even powerhouse nations like India and China exhibit significantly lower ratios than Portugal. It’s important to note that these ratios refer to native speakers

PS – The aforementioned Book of Disquiet was written in the aftermath of the First World War and on it Fernando Pessoa wrote the following “No empire justifies breaking a child’s doll”

Lowering room temperature in European households is of course an interesting idea but that does not work for the many millions that already live in energy poverty (Mapping energy poverty in the EU: policies, metrics and data). Moreover, 1.8 billion will have a minor impact on Russian energy exports that reached almost 500 billion in 2021.

A França que era há poucos anos o país recordista no acesso ao famoso site pirata Sci-hub (vide post acima), que é famoso por alojar publicações científicas sem ter permissão legal para esse efeito, foi ultrapassado pelos EUA e pela China, país asiático este que só no mês passado descarregou mais de 25 milhões de artigos da referida plataforma https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00556-y 

Sucede porém que dificilmente se pode considerar um roubo, aquilo que o SCI-HUB faz às editoras, pois também se pode considerar uma forma (refinada e cínica) de roubo, obrigar os cientistas a entregar de borla o produto do seu trabalho, que é depois vendido com  com elevado lucro do qual recebem literalmente zero, valendo assim o provérbio que dita que ladrão que rouba ladrão tem 100 anos de perdão. 

PS –  Quem sabe se mais Colegas mudam o seu “mindset” e começam a encarar as coisas nessa perspectiva, talvez daqui a uns tempos começem a sentir uma elevada indignação por conta desse roubo e nessa altura em vez de lermos trabalhos com o título “O que é conhecimento científico e como ele é criado, acumulado, transformado e usado?“  pudessemos ler antes algo muito mais realista, do género“O que é conhecimento científico e como ele é criado, acumulado, transformado e roubado?”

The recent link above shows that Sweden, Iceland, Finland, and Norway are the countries with the least discrimination levels in the workplace for women. However, it remains, to be seen, whether these advanced female work conditions will one day contribute to reaching the radical stage defended by the doctorate Meike Stoverock that I mentioned a year ago when I added a humorous question related to the mating habits of the Tasmanian devil.

However, bearing in mind that we are now living in the midst of a war (started by a pathological liar who, while in “university”, authored a poor academic dissertation and who is now so desperate, with troops that have no fuel and no food, that he just start using hypersonic missiles) a tragic moment that does not lend itself to moments of great humor, but which fortunately helps to remember that the most infamous genocides in History are all Male, so it makes sense to ask, would Meike Stoverock’s radical proposal allow us to reduce the number of genocides on our Planet?

Speaking about Christians, it’s important to remember that the very first public miracle that Jesus Christ did was at a wedding feast and his mother told Him that wine had run out, and then He transformed water into wine. Unsurprisingly, Bloodymir Putin is known to generally avoid drinking alcohol, which is also further evidence to support my hypothesis. Furthermore, several centuries before Jesus Christ was born the Greek historian Herodotus reported that the first Persian empire had a most interesting way of making decisions using wine so probably if Bloodymir Putin was a true Christian or at least had some of the wisdom of the first Persian empire the bloody invasion of Ukraine would never have happened. 

In an older post of  18-09-2019, I presented a most interesting map of 4000 years of world history. In it, it is possible to notice that on a millennial-scale the Russian empire is a bad joke that can’t even compete with the disappeared Portuguese empire that lasted more than half a millennium. It is also possible to notice that several empires lasted more than 1000 years and then simply disappeared. The Kush and the Silla empires are just two of them, how many can remember the names of their emperors now ? The Roman empire lasted almost 1500 years but where´s Rome now? Ironically it was conquered by Jesus Christ even though he had no army, never won a single battle, or even wrote anything. His “empire” has lasted for two millennia and will last as many because it is based only on everlasting inspirational words. As to Orc Bloodymir Putin in a few hundred years or much earlier than that, no one will remember his name. He’s less than a history midge.

PS – Also interesting (in historical terms) is Orc Putin’s dissertation which is “poorly organized, poorly written, and poorly researched”

Ainda sobre o h-index, convém lembrar  o facto da Presidência da Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho ter criado um prémio que leva em conta o desvio relativamente ao h-index médio na base Scopus dos catedráticos de cada área científica https://pacheco-torgal.blogspot.com/2021/07/o-h-index-e-os-premios-de.html e já agora também o estudo de Koltun que mostra que nas áreas científicas (como a Física, Medicina e Biologia) onde é normal haver publicações com centenas e milhares de co-autores que o h-index deve ser substituído pelo seu análogo fracionado. Quem obviamente não vale a pena candidatar-se ao  Conselho Científico do ERC é uma professora associada do Técnico cujo h-index na base Scopus é inexplicavelmente apenas metade do h-index de uma aluna de doutoramento que orientei há não muitos anos e que concluiu a sua tese em 2016  https://pacheco-torgal.blogspot.com/2021/07/o-h-index-da-nova-presidente-da.html

Depois que na passada sexta-feira, o Expresso achou uma excelente ideia fazer uma miserável entrevista ao Embaixador da Rússia em Portugal (que deve ter deixado com os cabelos em pé os Ucranianos que vivem em Portugal há vários anos e que na semana passada tiveram a má sorte de comprar aquele semanário), no qual aquele individuo aproveitou para debitar a sua propaganda habitual e também para agradecer a vários generais Portugueses, que andam pelas televisões a explicar a bondade militar da invasão Russa da Ucrânia, talvez o Expresso devesse esta semana convidar uma comentadora do género feminino, como por exemplo aquela jovem muito esclarecida, a mesma que é muito amiga das suas amigas e obviamente, como qualquer comunista, muito imparcial sobre todos os assuntos que digam respeito à Rússia, e que só tem algumas limitações formativas sobre museus, mas que não a impediram de ser directora de um museu, porque uma comunista é por definição uma mulher total com capacidade para qualquer cargo, seja ele qual for. Tem também umas lacunas sobre animais mitológicos de nome gulag mas isso é somente porque se trata de um animal muito raro. Mas se por um grande azar não for essa a escolhida pelo Expresso eu só peço que pelo menos não seja ninguém do partido Chega, que esse pessoal é sabido que é tudo gente muitíssimo pior do que o Putin, apesar de alguns deles, como aquele que eu chamei em tempos de “reles oportunista” ter sobre a invasão Russa da Ucrânia, estranhamente, a mesma opinião da Raquel Varela. 

PS1 – O jornal Público informou ontem, que a Câmara Municipal do Seixal, de maioria comunista, demandou judicialmente a revista Visão, somente porque aquela revista teve o atrevimento de informar os seus leitores, que a referida Câmara utilizou o dinheiro dos impostos dos contribuintes deste país (em vez de ser como era suposto com o dinheiro do PCP que tem milhões ou do Sr. Putin), para pagar horas extraordinárias aos seus funcionários que trabalharam na festa do Avante. A Câmara em questão perdeu no tribunal de primeira instância e não contente recorreu dessa sentença para o tribunal da Relação onde voltou a perder.  Resta agora saber se vão pedir ao Sr. Putin que ordene a este último tribunal que reverta a sua decisão sob pena de bombardear o nosso país.  

PS2 – O jornal Público dá hoje conta de uma proposta de um famoso académico Francês e outros académicos menos conhecidos, para que a União Europeia crie uma unidade de investigação para descobrir e apreender todo o dinheiro Russo que está escondido em paraísos fiscais, o que faz todo o sentido até porque o Washington Post noticiou há poucos minutos que a Rússia vai, pela primeira vez, desde 1918 entrar em default (falência técnica) no pagamento de juros de uma divida total que ascende  a 150 biliões de dólares.
